SOS WATER SUPPLY - SUMMER PERIOD

                                                                                                                        13th July 2012

To: All the residents of Kouklia area

Urgent importance

Dear resident,

SOS WATER SUPPLY - SUMMER PERIOD

I am writing to inform you about possible problems we may have with the supply of potable water over the next three months and to ask for your help.

You may be aware that the supply of water is now managed by a National Water Board. It now determines where our water is sourced and is responsible for delivery to our homes. You may not be aware that Kouklia Council no longer is able to source water from the wells which we own and previously used.

Last year Kouklia Council experienced little in the way of disruption to supply largely because pumping of water was done on a continuous 24 hour basis. This cannot be guaranteed this year. In addition, the storage capacity for water is limited and the pumping station can only deliver 70 tonnes of water per hour. It is therefore likely that at peak times a shortage will develop unless we are all vigilant in the use of water.

I am sure we will all agree that the priority must be to ensure that we all have sufficient water to enjoy daily living ie drinking, washing etc. Additional use such as for gardens, washing cars, swimming pools, etc must be kept to a minimum. It is imperative that we all ensure proper management of water for such purposes and the attached list will help in that regard. It is incumbent on us all to ensure that water use is properly managed and I ask that you ensure contractors who work on your behalf ie gardeners, pool cleaners etc do so.

However, past experience has shown that there are those who will continue to be profligate with water (more than 100 residents used more than 300 tonnes last year during this period). It is therefore unfortunately necessary to impose on those a penalty to help concentrate their minds for the good of the careful resident. For this period only (August - Sept) the following rates will apply to those who use water above the following limits:

201 - 300 tonnes   10 euros per tonne

301 - 400 tonnes   15 euros per tonne

401 - 500 tonnes   20 euros per tonne

5 euros will continue to be added to these rates for every additional 100 tonnes used.

This is not intended as a money-making scheme for Kouklia Council but is necessary to ensure that we all use water sparingly. I sincerely hope that the imposition of these additional rates will not be necessary.

On behalf of the

Kouklia Community Council
