CULTURAL EVENTS
The Kouklia Youth Centre organises every year activities and events
with marches against drugs from Kouklia to Paphos. It also organises
events in honour of the Mother, old people and different other artistic
events.
In cooperation with the Expatriates
Association and the Youth Club, the Community has organised a yearly
PAPHIAN APRODITE festival for twelve years.
TWINNINGS
The Community Council is in process of twinning with Tegea.
DAC PROGRAMME FOR
TORRENT ESTUARIES (March 2000-April 2001)
The Kouklia Community Council participates in the DAC programme
of the Ministry of Public Works and Environment -Greece Consequences
from the shortage and management of water resources in torrent estuaries
an island environment"
The target of the program was the comprehension
and knowledge of the torrent estuariessystems, through the development
and pilot application of a biotic and geomorphologic characteristics
observation programme. A part of the northern Paphos coast, about
20 kilometres long, was chosen as an area of interest, in which
four torrents end up: the river Ezousas, the river Xeros, the Diarizos
and Ha-Potami.
Main results of the programme
o Installation of a bio observation system in
connexion with the geomorphologic parameter observation system which
enables the creation of a reference system for future ground measuring
and, consequently, it is henceforth possible to observe the evolution
in time of the river estuaries ecosystem.
o Development of a biotic and non biotic parameter data bank on
a digital disc for easy use which concentrates all the existing
information and can be used as a basis for further studies, but
also as a source of information for the better comprehension of
the torrent estuariessystem.
o Sensitisation of the local society to the site of the river mouths,
which is part of everyday life but is simultaneously so unknown.
" THRACE - AEGEAN
- CYPRUS" PROGRAMME ( June 2001 - June 2002)
" The natural beauty meets the myth on the
coasts of Thrace, Aegean, Cyprus'' is the title of the work with
which the Kouklia Community Council takes part as a sponsor and
which was approved for allowance within the framework of the Thrace-Aegean-Cyprus"
2001 Programme. The cooperating organisations are the Moudrou Municipality
of Limnos, the Municipal Samothraki Development Enterprise and the
Mediterranean SOS Network.
The aim of the work is to elaborate a study and develop activities
for the protection of the coastline which preserve their natural
characteristics and are related to Greek Mythology and history and
which are found in the immediate neighbouhood of development areas.
The first working meeting was held in Kouklia
on 7-10 June 2001, whereas the next meeting will take place in Limno
and Samothraki next September.
